Chalk paint

the matte all-rounder for creative expression

Aquarylic Chalk Paint combines maximum opacity, a velvety matte surface and a wide range of applications. It was developed especially for artists looking for a medium that stands out for its intense pigmentation, its distinctive color behavior and maximum flexibility in use.

the special composition of our chalk paint

Our Chalk Paint is based on a specially developed formula with a high chalk content, which gives it outstanding opacity and a velvety, slightly powdery look. The finely balanced binders produce a paint that goes on particularly evenly without losing its characteristic matte texture.

Unlike many conventional chalk paints, Aquarylic Chalk Paint leaves an abrasion-resistant surface and impresses with a smooth, easily controlled consistency – perfect for versatile artistic work.

matte, intense and rich in contrast

Matte paints have a very special effect in art. They absorb light more strongly than glossy or satin paints, creating a depth that makes the subject look particularly expressive. This effect matters especially for contemporary artworks, but also for classic still lifes and mixed-media techniques.

  • High opacity – Perfect for even, uniform areas of color. The Chalk Paint can be applied both as impasto and in several thin layers.
  • Velvety matte look – Ideal for elegant, contemporary compositions. It scatters light especially softly and minimizes reflections.
  • Harmonious contrasts – Especially in combination with the glossy Aquarylic Color or the satin matte finish of our Acrylic Paints. The contrast between glossy and matte brings works to life.

For artists who work with contrast, the Chalk Paint is an excellent tool for rendering light and shadow to striking effect.

applications – from opaque to glazing

  • Opaque application: Neat from the tube or container for rich, intense areas.
  • Glazing technique: Thinned with water, it creates fine, powdery transitions.
  • Layered painting: Thanks to its short drying time, you can build up many layers without lifting the layers underneath.
  • Texture techniques: Combines perfectly with fillers such as Gray Stone Powder for impasto, sculptural surfaces.

Thanks to its strong adhesion, the Chalk Paint is suitable for almost any painting ground – canvas, wood, paper and much more.

chalk paint for furniture painting and wood

Chalk Paint is not only an outstanding choice for canvas and paper – it is also ideal for designing and restoring furniture and for wood projects of all kinds. Its high chalk content ensures excellent adhesion on untreated, sanded or previously painted wood, without a primer being strictly necessary.

With its velvety matte surface, you can style furniture in the popular vintage, shabby chic or country style. This creates especially soft, harmonious color transitions that can be refined further with sanding techniques.

  • High opacity: A single coat is enough for an even, opaque surface.
  • Matte, velvety look: Gives an elegant yet natural appearance.
  • No primer needed: The Chalk Paint adheres excellently directly to wood, including unvarnished or lightly varnished surfaces.
  • Many design options: Sanding techniques let you create distressed, worn-look effects.

For furniture that is used regularly, we recommend a final seal with wax or varnish to protect the surface in the long term.

pouring techniques with chalk paint

The artwork shown is a good example: the petals are created entirely with our Chalk Paint. The technique uses the high chalk content to produce a natural “chalking” of the pigments, which makes the surface look soft and diffuse.

How the technique works:

  1. Dilute 1 part white Chalk Paint with 4 parts water.
  2. Prime the canvas with a dark Acrylic Paint, e.g. Gray Blue Dark. The dark primer strengthens the contrast.
  3. Lay down the petals one by one and watch how the surface “chalks out”.
  4. For finer effects, you can use a pipette to remove excess water precisely.

A tip for adventurous artists: combine the Chalk Paint with other media such as the glossy Aquarylic Color to bring matte and shimmering effects together in one work.

what makes chalk paint white special

  • Excellent for lightening other colors.
  • Ideal for glazes with a powdery effect.
  • Suitable for making modeling pastes, especially in combination with Gray Stone Powder. Mixing it with our white Chalk Paint creates an impasto paste that is excellent for textured painting techniques or sculptural effects.

chalk paint as a primer – even more absorbent than gesso

Gesso is a classic primer in painting that usually creates a slightly porous surface so that acrylic or oil paint adheres better. Our Chalk Paint goes one step further: its particularly high chalk content creates a deeper absorbency that makes colors look especially intense and luminous.

Comparison: Chalk Paint as a primer vs. gesso

  • Absorbency: Chalk Paint offers higher porosity than conventional gesso, so colors are absorbed more intensely.
  • Matte finish: While gesso often leaves a slightly rough surface, the Chalk Paint offers a velvety texture that is soft and pleasant.

Especially when working with glazes or luminous applications of color, the Chalk Paint used as a ground can noticeably intensify the effect of the colors.
